Subject Areas:
Module 1: Pharmacology of Analgesics
Learning Outcomes
· Differentiate the mechanism of action of opioids and their interaction with other receptors (mu, kappa, delta, NOP) in veterinary species.
· Understand how to administer the correct opioid or NSAID based on species-specific considerations and the duration of action needed for surgery or postoperative care.
· Differentiate between pure mu agonists, partial mu agonists, and kappa agonist/mu antagonists, considering their analgesic effectiveness and clinical uses.
· Demonstrate how to assess the suitability of local anesthetics and their use in managing acute and chronic pain, with an emphasis on pharmacokinetics and side effects.
· Explain how to design a pain management plan for a post-operative veterinary patient using a combination of opioids, NSAIDs, and local anesthetics while considering the patient’s condition and surgery specifics.
Module 2: Pain Management in Animals
Learning Outcomes
· Explain the pain pathway, including the processes of transduction, transmission, modulation, and perception.
· Demonstrate the technique of performing an epidural for pain management in small and large animals.
· Differentiate between chronic and acute pain mechanisms and how NMDA receptors contribute to the development of chronic pain.
· Assess the benefits and limitations of systemic versus local regional anesthesia in veterinary practice.
· Design a pain management protocol incorporating local anesthetic techniques and pain scoring systems for post-surgical veterinary patients.
Module 3: Opioid Abuse & The Pandemic
Learning Outcomes
1. Understanding Epidemiological Trends: Participants will be able to analyze and interpret the trends in opioid toxicity-related deaths in the United States, including demographic disparities and changes during the COVID-19 pandemic.
